About Indira Gandhi-


We all hear the name Indira Gandhi. She was the first and only female Prime Minister in India. She was connected to Congress party. Indira Gandhi was the second-longest-serving Prime Minister of India after her father. She became the Prime Minister from 1966 to 1977. As the Prime Minister of India, Gandhi was known for her political ruthlessness and unprecedented centralisation of power.




Indira Gandhi was born on 19 November 1917 in Allahabad and her name was Indira Nehru.  She was belonged to a Kashmiri Pandit family. Jawaharlal Nehru was the father of Indira Gandhi and mother was Kamala Nehru. She was only child of Jawaharlal Nehru. (Jawaharlal had a son but he died when he was very young.) Jawaharlal Nehru was the first prime minister of India so she belongs to a political family. She lived lonely in childhood because his father often away, directing political activities and his mother was frequently bed-ridden with illness, and later suffered an early death from tuberculosis. She connected to his father by only letters. Her first school was Modern School in Delhi. She changed her school many times (International School of Geneva, Pupils' Own School in Poona and Ecole Nouvelle in Bex). She and her mother Kamala Nehru moved to Belur Math headquarters of Ramakrishna Mission where Swami Ranganathananda was her guardian. She went on to study at the Viswa Bharati University in Shantiniketan. During this period she meat to Rabindranath Tagore and he gave Indira to a name “Priyadarshini”. After that she knew as Indira Priyadarshini Nehru. After a year she decided to complete her education at the University of Oxford. In 1936, Indira came back to India and joined the Indian National Congress. During this she meets Feroze Gandhi. He was also an important member of the Youth Wing of Congress. Indira got married to Feroze Gandhi in 1941. Now she became Indira Gandhi to Indira Nehru. In 1944 she give birth her first child (Rajiv Gandhi) and after two years she gave another child (Sanjay Gandhi).

Indira Gandhi became President of the Congress in the end of 1950. In 1964, after the death of his father, she was appointed as a member of the Rajya Sabha and became a member of Lal Bahadur Shastri's cabinet as Minister of Information and Broadcasting. On 11 January 1966, she became prime minister over the Morarji Desai after the death of Lal Bahadur Shastri.  




Indira Gandhi was known for her awesome leadership and form. She became instrumental in inflicting a crushing defeat to Pakistan in 1971 and liberating East Pakistan later renamed as Bangladesh. Indira Gandhi served as Prime Minister from 1966 to 1977 and then again from 1980 until her assassination (by her bodyguard) in 1984, 

After leading India to victory against Pakistan in the Bangladesh liberation war in 1971, President V. V. Giri awarded Indira Gandhi India's highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna. In 2011, the Bangladesh Freedom Honour (Bangladesh Swadhinata Sammanona) Bangladesh's highest civilian award, was posthumously conferred on Indira Gandhi for her outstanding contributions to Bangladesh's Liberation War.
