What is Technology?

Though technology is making lives of humans easier and comfortable. It poses a great threat to the environment. The threat is due to pollution, radiation hazards, exploitation of natural resources etc.

Radiation hazard is increasing day by day due use of mobile phones and Wi-Fi around us. Hence we can notice that many small birds and insects like honey bees are not found around these days. Even governments are promising to give free Wi-Fi without realizing its harmful effects. If you wish to know the harsh effects, sit in a library or conference room with Wi-Fi enabled inside. You will notice to be having stomach acidity or a headache there. Wi-Fi reduces the use of wired internet connectivity. Still, it has untoward effects on the humans and environments.

Effects of Technology:-

Increase in Travel:- We travel more and also unnecessarily sometimes. By this we contribute to air pollution directly. We go on tours round the world and even on long drives. This is done even previously when the technology was low. But then the chances of pollution were meagre. We relied on horses, camels and bulls for travel by road. By seas we relied on large boats and vessels. These methods of travel are time consuming but are less polluting. But current technology is so advanced that we travel from one part of the world to another in short time. This is great but has greater risk for human life and environment.

Excess power consumption:- Power consumption is high due to technology. We use technology in education, work place, at home and even in remote places. We are addicted to television, smart phones and other gadgets. So we always need electric energy to make them work non-stop. This electric energy is generated by use of fossil or nuclear fuels on large scale. Previous man did not need electricity throughout the day. He needed it for night lightening. Now he needs it 24 hours and in all the seasons to keep his gadgets running.

We generate more waste:- We contribute a large amount of toxic waste in the name of technological up-gradation. Previously people used large sized computers. For this we needed large monitors, CPUs, separate key boards, mouse etc. Now we tend to use laptops and tablets for their compactness and portability. They do not have separate parts like monitors, keyboards etc. So in upgrading to laptops, all the large size desktop computers were disposed into environment. Similarly tungsten bulbs were replaced by florescent bulbs which are again being replaced by incandescent bulbs.

Excess use of gadgets:- Now a day we can see many people on the roads, trains and even parks busy on their mobiles or tablets. This is more of an addiction to gadgets and the apps inside.

This leads to need for Wi-Fi and other wireless connectivity. Due to this wireless technology, the radiation exposure is high leading to silent health problems. Even it is believed that some birds also get extinct in the region of these Wi-Fi enabled areas.

Excess Deforestation:- In the name of development, comfort etc. there is  widespread deforestation. This is possible due to the larger capacity of machinery technology. We make wide clearing of greenery in short span and also dig tunnels through a hill.

Solution of Technology:-

Decrease the traveling:- While using those means of public transportation is environmentally friendly. Carpooling means more people in a single car, means less number of individual cars on the road; and what does that lead to? Less air pollution, less noise pollution, less carbon emission, less greenhouse gas emission. Carpooling is a direct step towards a cleaner and greener environment.

Save power:- When you consume less power, you reduce the amount of toxic fumes released by power plants, conserve the earth's natural resources and protect ecosystems from destruction. By taking steps to reduce your energy intake, you'll contribute to a healthier and happier world.

Reduce waste:- Reducing waste helps the environment because all items consumed use natural resources and energy and generate pollution during production. Additionally, using space for landfills means that, over time, there is less space for other activities, such as growing food and housing people.  Finally, the energy used to transport garbage from the curb to the landfill creates air pollution at every point along the garbage transfer route.

Stop Deforestation:- Ending deforestation is our best chance to conserve wildlife and defend the rights of forest communities. On top of that, it’s one of the quickest and most cost effective ways to curb global warming.
