Conservation of Water

What is Conservation of Water?

Water conservation includes all the policies, strategies and activities made to sustainably manage the natural resource fresh water, to protect the water environment, and to meet the current and future human demand. Population, household size, and growth and affluence all affect how much water is used. Factors such as climate change have increased pressures on natural water resources especially in manufacturing and agricultural irrigation. Many US cities have already implemented policies aimed at water conservation, with much success.

Conservation of Water Ways:-

Ways to Conserve Water in Kitchen:-

  • When washing dishes by hand, fill the sink basin or a large container and rinse when all of the dishes have been soaped and scrubbed.
  • Don’t let the faucet run while you clean vegetables. In-fact, clean them in the pan of clean water.
  • Always have the bottle of clean water in the refrigerator; this will help in reducing the running tap water.
  • Turn off water faucets tightly so they don’t drip.
  • When you wash dishes by hand doesn’t left the water running for rinsing.
  • Re-use the water left over from cooked or steamed foods to start a scrumptious and nutritious soup.

Ways to Conserve Water in Bathroom:-

  • Don’t take lengthy showers. Though it may be comforting but it may lead to wastage of water.
  • Avoid flushing the toilet unnecessarily.
  • Don’t let water run while shaving or washing your face. Brush your teeth first while waiting `for water to get hot, then wash or shave after filling the basin.
  • Keep a bucket in the shower to catch water as it warms up or runs. Use this water to flush toilets or water plants.
  • Check faucets and pipes for leaks
  • If you’re taking a shower, don’t waste cold water while waiting for hot water to reach the shower head. Catch that water in a container to use on your outside plants or to flush your toilet.

Ways to Conserve Water Outside:-

  • Water your lawn and garden in the morning or evening when temperatures are cooler to minimize evaporation. You can even use a hose water timer to make sure you aren’t using too much water.
  • Collect the water you use for rinsing fruits and vegetables, and then reuse it to water houseplants.
  • Collect water from your roof using a rainwater tank to water your garden.
  • Rather than following a set watering schedule, check for soil moisture two to three inches below the surface before watering.
  • Water only when necessary. More plants die from over-watering than from under-watering.
  • Wash your pets outdoors in an area of your lawn that needs water.
  • If you accidentally drop ice cubes when filling your glass from the freezer, don’t throw them in the sink. Drop them in a house plant instead.
  • Ask your plumber if he could re-route your gravy water to trees and gardens rather than letting it run into the sewer line. Check with your city codes, and if it isn’t allowed in your area, start a movement to get that changed.
  • When shopping for a new clothes washer, compare resource savings among Energy Star models. Some of these can save up to 20 gallons per load, and energy too.

Ways to Conserve Water in Industry:-

  • Recycling and Reuse:- Industries have many opportunities to reuse water within their own plants to minimize their draw on municipal drinking water sources. Water used for one purpose can often be saved and reused for another, especially after filtering. For example, a plant can run gravy water from sinks and cleaning through a filter for use as cooling water for machinery. As long as the reused water is clean enough or has been cleaned enough for use in its new role, recycling water this way saves a significant amount of drinking water from being used for jobs that do not require potable (drinkable) water. Many car washes already do this on a smaller scale.
  • Educate your employees:- Build understanding in your employees why water is important and let them innovate ways to water conservation. You can announce awards in your company for identifying and innovative solutions to reduce water consumption.
  • Routine Checks:- Installation on Monitoring, water pressure meter and water flow meter will help to identify leakage in pipes, joints and valves.
  • Minimal use in Cleaning:- To avoid high water consumption we can shift to electric brooms, vacuum cleaner or other cleaning devices (like squeegees etc.) in initial process. Wash Equipment’s as and when required than regularly. Reduce the uses of water sprinkler.
  • Ways to reuse:- Water We can save water in Industries by Reuse Hula-box seal water, Reuse of Centrifugal pump seal water, Reuse vacuum pump seal water, use condenser water for steam makeup.
  • Water Recycling:- It is wrong assumption that all processes require pure drinking water (potable water) in business. We can reuse water (Non-Potable) in plant wherever possible. Let’s say for fire protection, pH adjustment we can use non-potable water. Installation of cooling tower to recycle water with efficient refrigeration loop can save up to 25% of total water consumption.
  • Install Water saving equipment:- There are plenty of water Conservation equipment are available. Consider using them. Such as toilet systems, tap aerators, also replace tap from high volume to high pressure and low volume.
