Personal Life

Juhi was born in the Chawla family on November 13, 1967 in Ludhiana, Punjab, India, and is the daughter of Punjabi-speaking dad, Dr. S. Chawla and Gujarati-speaking mom, Mona. She has a brother named Sanjeev. Her mother passed away in an accident during the year 1998 while Juhi was filming 'Duplicate'.

After completing her school in Ludhiana, the Chawla family moved to Bombay, Maharashtra, India, where Juhi attended at Sydenham College. After graduating, she entered in the Miss India competition and was crowned 'Miss India 1984', taking over from Miss India 1983, Rekha Hande.

Juhi got married to multi-millionaire industrialist, Jai Mehta during the year 1998. Since then the couple have a daughter, Jhanvi, and son, Arjun.

Early Life

Juhi Chawla was born in Ambala, Haryana, India. Her father was an officer of the Indian Revenue Service (IRS). She completed her schooling from Fort Convent School, Mumbai, and graduated from Sydenham College, Mumbai with a specialisation in HR. She was the winner of Miss India title in 1984.[9] She also won the Best Costume Award in the Miss Universe contest in 1984. She is also an accomplished dancer. In a Baaje Payal (a film based on a collection of interviews for dancers/actresses) interview, she mentioned having learned Kathak for three years and regretted giving it up as it could have helped her in her career as an actress. She is also an accomplished classical singer and has been training for the last six years.


Social work

Chawla has been associated with a number of charities and social causes in India as well as Internationally. She espouses the fight against the deadly disease thalassaemia and has worked to organise events to raise money for the same. Chawla has also been on a mission to educate users on the perils of mobile phone radiation. She has been visiting schools, speaking at seminars, working with citizens groups and calling on ministers and authorities to drive her point home. In November 2015, she was bestowed with the Indira Gandhi Memorial Award in Social Awareness for her active participation and selfless efforts towards creating awareness about the health hazards caused due to mobile tower antennae radiation.

She has also donated eyes to a eye donation camp and urged people do donate blood also.


Ownership of IPL cricket team

In 2008, Chawla and her husband Jay Mehta in partnership with actor Shahrukh Khan acquired ownership rights for the franchise representing Kolkata in the Twenty20 cricket tournament Indian Premier League, for a price of 300 crore, around $75 million at the time and have since named the team Kolkata Knight Riders.

As of 2009, KKR was one of the richest teams in the IPL and had been ranked as the most valued with a brand value of $42.1 million. Financially, Kolkata Knight Riders were the most profitable and successful franchise in the IPL as well. The team was surrounded with controversy and poor on-field performance through the first three years of the tournament. Its performance, however, improved from the fourth season and they eventually became the IPL champions for the first time in 2012.

Acting Career

Juhi Chawla got her first break in Bollywood with the film Saltanat in 1986 . The film went unnoticed and so did Juhi. But it didn't take too long for her to establish herself as an actress. Her next film Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak in 1988 was a huge hit. In the film she starred opposite Aamir Khan. They soon became a hit couple for films and acted together in many films which include Love Love Love, Tum Mere Ho, Daulat Ki Jung, Atank Hi Atank, and Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke. Shahrukh Khan is another hero with whom she has acted in a number of films and has given hits like Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman, Duplicate, Yes Boss and Darr. Some of her other smashing hits are Bol Radha Bol, Hain Rahi pyar Ke, and Ishq.

Juhi Chawla has acted in nearly eighty movies and played diverse roles in these movies. She has established herself in the film industry as a versatile actress. She won the Filmfare Award in 1994 in the Best Actress category for her film Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke and the Screen Award in 2004 for the Best Supporting Actress. Her film My Brother Nikhil won the Audience Choice Award at the Milan gay and Lesbian film festival. She received accolades from the film fraternity for her recently released film Salaam-e-Ishq.
