Jaspal Rana

Jaspal Rana was born on 28 June 1976 in a Rajput family in Tehri Garhwal, in Uttar Pradesh (now Uttarakhand). He grew up in Mussoorie, Dehradun, Nainbagh and later on in Delhi and studied at the K.V. Air Force Station Tughlkabad, and St. Stephen's and Sri Aurobindo colleges. His first coach was his father, Narayan Singh Rana, an Indo-Tibetan Border Police official. Later on Tibor Ganazol coached him to perfection.

Jaspal Rana made his first appearance at a shooting competition held at the national level, at the tender age of 12. It was at that time, when he grabbed a silver medal at the 31st National Shooting Championship held at Ahmadabad in 1988. Six years later, Rana shot into limelight, when he competed in Standard Pistol and won gold at the 46th World Shooting Championship (Junior Section). Thereafter, he set a world record score at Milan in Italy in 1994. Since then, Rana has been honored with galore in both domestic and international events, many a times, rewriting the records set in the shooting sport.

Jaspal Rana twice equaled the world record score of 590 points in Centre Fire Pistol event for two times - first at the National Shooting Championship at Coimbatore in 1995 and the second at the National Games held at Bangalore in 1997. Though Centre Fire Pistol is Rana's favorite event wherein he scores the best, he also did well in Air Pistol, Standard Pistol, Free Pistol and Rapid Fire Pistol. 

In Politics

Rana was a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party. Shortly after the Asian Games, he indicated that he would be interested in contesting elections and campaigning for the party. Recently political party BJP has announced that Rana will be contesting Lok Sabha elections from Tehri seat which also comprises most of the Dehradun town, Uttarkashi and Tehri district of Uttarakhand. Jaspal rana contestd 2009 loksabha election from tehri gharwal seat representing BJP but unfortunately he lost to Vijay bahuguna of congress.Rana joined the INC (Indian National Congress) in year 2012 and is presently an active member of the party in Uttarakhand.

Personal life

He was married to Reena Rana, a fashion designer and national level shooter, and has two children, daughter Devanshi, and son Yuvraj. He has two siblings Sushma Singh (Rana), who is also the daughter-in-law of Rajnath Singh, an eminent BJP leader and Subhash Rana. Both his siblings are also accomplished shooters.
