India is located in south Asia. The capital is New Delhi, and the language most people speak is Hindi. A person who is from India is Indian. India is the seventh largest country in the world. It has the second highest population (After China).

1. About 1.2 billion people live in India.

2. The currency in India is the rupee.

3. Women in India wear saris, and men wear dhotis. Both are long pieces of cloth draped around the body in a certain way.

4. The capital of India is New Delhi, but the largest city is Mumbai.

5. Animals found in India include Bengal tigers, elephants, flying foxes, lions and macaques.

6. India is officially known as the Republic of India.

7. The highest mountain in India is Kanchenjunga, standing at 8,598m (28,209 ft), which it shares with Nepal. Kanchenjunga is the third highest mountain in the world.

8. The Taj Mahal (a famous mausoleum and popular tourist attraction) is located in the region of Agra.

9. The national symbol of India is the endangered Bengal Tiger.

10. India became an independent nation in 1947 after ending British rule that began in 1858. A popular instrument in India is the sitar, which is like a guitar but with a much longer neck.

11. There are three bodies of water around India – the Indian Ocean, Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal.

12. Children in India begin school in April or June.

13. Cows are seen as sacred in India – nobody eats beef, and most people are vegetarians.

20. The monsoon season in India is the time when the country has the most rain, and it can last from July to September.

21. India is the only country in the world where both lions and tigers live.

22. The main river in India is the Ganges, in the northeast of the country.
