Baseball is the national sport of the United States. It is similar to older but-and-ball games, such as the English game rounders. Baseball matches are played between two teams of nine players each. A match is divided into nine periods, called innings. While one team bats, the other team fields, which involves collecting the ball after the batter has hit it and trying to get him or her out. The baseball field has four bases. The batters have to hit the ball and run between the bases to score points, called runs, for their team. The fielders try to get the batters out in a number of different ways. These could include catching the ball, and “tagging” a runner with the ball as he or she runs between bases. if a batter manages to run around all the bases. If a batter manages to run around all the bases after hitting the ball without being caught out, he or she scores a home run.
